Going to ATL? Check out> The Word Is Spoken and the

This Weekend In Atlanta
This weekend, The National Black Arts Festival and Rialto Center for the Arts presents Marc Bamuthi Joseph's the break/s and Universes' Live From The Edge in an evening of Hip Hop Theater. Hip Hop Theater blends Spoken Word, Theater, Dance and Music. It's totally outside of the lines of what you think theater is, yet true to studied artistic form. These modern day griots, Marc from the Bay Area and Universes from the Bronx, stir up art, culture, politics and personal stories into performances that make audiences laugh, participate and think. At the end of the day it's all about the yes, yes, ya'll...the call and response of it all.

The Workshops
Saturday, October 3, 12:30 PM- 3:00 PM @ the Rialto Center for the Arts (lobby and black box)

Students learn how to improve the structure and delivery of your spoken word and hear what it takes to move from local poetry slams to HBO's Def Poetry Jam and stages all over the world. We have 10-15 spaces allotted for the AU Center.

The Performances
The performances will take place on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at 8 PM - 10 PM at the Rialto. Tickets are $25, $16 for students. Immediately following the performance on Friday will be a conversation with the artists about flipping poetry to stages around the world. Saturday evening will be a conversation with the artists and a local hip hop personality around what is hip hop... where is hip hop... where is the room for other art forms, hip hop's influence on cultural arts, the global picture and how do we move the conversation forward?

About the work that will be performed...

the break/s
A multimedia excursion across the planet, the break/s dramatically realizes the living history of the hip-hop generation through the performed personal narrative of poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Challenging, funny, and touching, the break/s is a deeply honest investigation into the conflicts between Bamuthi's public identity as successful spoken word artist, and his private identity as young man coming of age in our globalized, multi-everything era. A life-long performer, he leaves it all on stage-simultaneously devouring the space with everything from shamrocks to attitude turns and eloquently spitting rhymes spoken from the heart.

Live From the Edge
Universes’ presents Live From the Edge, an evening that showcases the ensemble’s special brand of fusion theater in a "best of" evening that tracks the evolution of their poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel. Redefining what theater is and who it speaks to, Live From the Edge is a unique performance event that turns the poem into a communal act.
