Harding High's quest to raise money to march in President-elect Obama's inauguration parade is sparking some serious party plans among community leaders who want to support them.

City Councilman Anthony Foxx has announced a fundraising tailgate party for Saturday – before the band plays at halftime of the Panthers' home playoff game against Arizona. The party will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Excelsior Club, 921 Beatties Ford Road. A football autographed by Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith will be auctioned off.

Another fundraiser is slated for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 15 at Tempo, 4809 Wilkinson Blvd. Admission is $10. The party is organized by IT Factor Media Group and Charlotte Vibe.com. Organizers say there will be raffles, comedy and appearances by Panthers players.

The band, which got the invitation in mid-December, has raised more than half the $50,000 needed to take about 125 students and adults to the Jan. 20 parade.
